Artist and filmmaker Ja’Tovia M. Gary has joined Paula Cooper Gallery in New York, where she will have a solo show in spring 2020. Gary’s work will also be on view at the gallery’s booth at Art Basel Miami Beach at the end of the year.

Through her documentary films and experimental video artworks, Gary examines the relationship between power structures and representations of race, gender, sexuality, and violence. The artist, who is also represented by Galerie Frank Elbaz in Paris, is a 2018–19 Radcliffe Fellow at Harvard University.

Gary’s work has been screened at the Frameline LGBTQ Film Festival, the Edinburgh International Film Festival, Inside Out Toronto, and other events. She has also shown at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, the Brooklyn Museum, the ICA Boston, MoMA PS1 in New York, and elsewhere. Her work is held of the permanent collection at the Whitney Museum in New York.

Steve Henry, the senior director of the gallery, said in a statement, “Ja’Tovia demonstrates a remarkable and incisive ability to explore ways in which place and time define our bodies and self. Using a broad range of techniques including animation, documentary, and narration, she creates potent, and often unsettling collages of images and sound. We are ecstatic to be working with her.”
