Galina Mardilovich, who has served as acting curator at the Amherst College’s Mead Art Museum since 2018, has been named curator of Russian and European art at the institution. She takes up the post on July 1.

In her new role, Mardilovich will develop exhibitions, propose acquisitions, and oversee research related to her field. She will also collaborate with the Amherst Center for Russian Culture, which holds a collection of over 600 paintings, drawings, and sculptures created by artists of the late 19th century.

Mardilovich organized two ongoing exhibitions at the museum, “Constructing Collage” and “Fleeting Nature: Selections from the Collection.” She is currently working on a book focused on printmaking in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and she has received fellowships and grants from the Gates Cambridge Trust, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Getty Research Institute, and other organizations.

She said in a statement, “I am excited about the opportunity to invigorate the wonderful exhibition program and work of the Mead, and to find new ways of engaging with the rich collections here, for both the students and our broader community. It has been inspiring to work with colleagues across the Amherst College faculty, and I am looking forward to continuing to build those relationships.”

David E. Little, director and chief curator of the Mead Art Museum, said of Mardilovich, “As a scholar who specializes in both prints and Russian art, she is uniquely positioned to create innovative exhibitions and programs, while extending our history of published scholarship in this field. I am excited that she has accepted this position and will be able to continue contributing to our community.”
