Memphis Brooks Museum of Art Picks Herzog & de Meuron to Design $105 M. Building -ARTnews

The Pritzker Prize–winning architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron will serve as the design consultant for a $105 million building for the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art in Tennessee. The structure will overlook the Mississippi River, and the Memphis-based company archimania will serve as architect of record for the project.

Comprising 112,000 square feet, the new museum will be about 25 percent larger than the Memphis Brooks’s existing facility in the city’s Overton Park area. The institution’s permanent collection will be on view in the building, where temporary exhibitions and other programming will also be held. A sculpture garden will provide space for public performances and other outdoor gatherings.

Herzog & de Meuron has previously designed buildings for the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, the de Young Museum in San Francisco, and the Pérez Art Museum Miami, among others.

Emily Ballew Neff, director of the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, said in a statement, “We have selected Herzog & de Meuron to partner with us because we respect their design philosophy: each project design evolves from a different and fitting formal response to the site and is then realized with unrivaled sensitivity to materials and craftsmanship. We’re embarking on a journey to create a landmark that will have enormous impact.”
