The Museum of Modern Art in New York has hired Lanka Tattersall to work as a curator in its drawings and prints department starting in July. The move is homecoming of sorts for Tattersall, who was a curatorial assistant in MoMA’s painting and sculpture department from 2010 to 2014, during which time she worked on the museum’s momentous Sigmar Polke retrospective.
Tattersall is currently associate curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles, where she has worked since 2015. For MOCA, she curated presentations of work by Lauren Halsey, Cameron Rowland, and Hito Steyerl, and commissioned works by Rafa Esparza, Njideka Akunyili Crosby, Juliana Huxtable, and Patrick Staff. She also currently oversees a fund for acquisitions of work by emerging artists at that museum and has a curatorial credit on a forthcoming Tala Madani survey there.
“With its unparalleled permanent collection, MoMA is an extraordinary place from which to build and question our understandings of art in our time,” Tattersall said in a statement. “I eagerly look forward to supporting artists by bringing their inventive, challenging and generative works and ideas to the museum.”
