Dia Art Foundation Names Kelly Kivland and Alexis Lowry as Curators -ARTnews

The Dia Art Foundation in New York has promoted Kelly Kivland and Alexis Lowry, both formerly in the role of associate curators, to the position of curator. In their new roles, they will develop and execute exhibitions and public programs across Dia’s locations in Manhattan and Beacon, New York. Kivland and Lowry will also work on the foundation’s acquisition program, publications, and exhibition catalogues.

Kivland, who has worked at Dia since 2011, will continue to oversee the stewardship of works of Land art in Utah, including Robert Smithson’s Spiral Jetty (1970) and the recently acquired Sun Tunnels (1973-76) by Nancy Holt. Her curatorial credits include a 2018-19 exhibition of Holt’s work at Dia:Chelsea and a presentation of Robert Irwin’s Excursus: Homage to the Square at Dia:Beacon.

Lowry, who is the daughter of Glenn Lowry, director of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, will remain involved with permanent installations in New Mexico and New York: Walter De Maria’s The Lightening Field and Max Neuhaus’s Times Square (both 1977). She joined Dia in 2015, and she co-curated this year’s “Charlotte Posenenske: Work in Progress” retrospective at Dia:Beacon. She has played a role in acquisitions of works by Mary Corse, Michelle Stuart, and Anne Truitt, and she produced the foundation’s DiaTalks series.

Jessica Morgan, Dia’s director, said in a statement, “Kelly Kivland and Alexis Lowry have both been an integral part of Dia’s curatorial team for many years and have consistently demonstrated remarkable passion and vision, as well as dedication to the artists that they have worked with over their respective careers. I am thrilled that they will be assuming these vital roles at such a crucial time in Dia’s history.”

Th curators’ new appointments follow the recently announced departure of Dia deputy director and chief curator Courtney J. Martin, who is leaving to serve as the director of the Yale Center for British Art.
