A sua inten\u00e7\u00e3o foi reverter a conota\u00e7\u00e3o negativa que havia sido atribu\u00edda ao consumo, ent\u00e3o percepcionado como uma colec\u00e7\u00e3o f\u00fatil de produtos, ou materialismo econ\u00f3mico.<br \/>\nA express\u00e3o \u201cconsumismo\u201d \u00e9 por defini\u00e7\u00e3o conflituante. Se, por um lado, descreve a forma como a sociedade e a economia se organizaram, com maior incid\u00eancia ap\u00f3s a revolu\u00e7\u00e3o industrial, para estimular a aquisi\u00e7\u00e3o de produtos e servi\u00e7os, por outro lado, explora o desequil\u00edbrio que resulta do excedente de oferta face \u00e0 procura, da exig\u00eancia de consumir, da obsolesc\u00eancia programada, do impacto ambiental e da influ\u00eancia negativa da publicidade.<br \/>\nO consumo, como o conhecemos, surge com a prosperidade econ\u00f3mica, associada ao rendimento dispon\u00edvel, que vieram possibilitar a aquisi\u00e7\u00e3o de bens n\u00e3o essenciais. No s\u00e9culo XVII, as lojas e os armaz\u00e9ns, eram, como os teatros, considerados locais de cultura e socializa\u00e7\u00e3o. No s\u00e9culo XVIII come\u00e7aram a ser comercializados produtos para o indiv\u00edduo, em oposi\u00e7\u00e3o a produtos para o lar. Estes produtos eram procurados pelos seus atributos de moda e estatuto social, e n\u00e3o apenas pela sua utilidade.<br \/>\nUma das maiores cr\u00edticas ao consumismo, e que afecta directamente a actividade publicit\u00e1ria, \u00e9 a no\u00e7\u00e3o de que o consumidor \u00e9 levado a acreditar que \u201cprecisa\u201d de um determinado produto, e n\u00e3o que o \u201cdeseja\u201d. Ou seja, que esse produto constitui uma necessidade e n\u00e3o um luxo. A comunica\u00e7\u00e3o digital, direccionada ao consumidor de acordo com as suas pr\u00f3prias pesquisas, comportamentos e interesses, veio contribuir para a percep\u00e7\u00e3o de que existe uma \u201cmanipula\u00e7\u00e3o\u201d da inten\u00e7\u00e3o de compra.<br \/>\nA possibilidade de utilizar esta data contribuiu de igual forma para uma ideia incorrecta de que as marcas podem subsistir neste espa\u00e7o transaccional, nesta rela\u00e7\u00e3o meramente funcional com o consumidor. A tenta\u00e7\u00e3o \u00e9 evidente. As empresas organizam a sua actividade em fun\u00e7\u00e3o da gest\u00e3o de recursos escassos, e comunicar com o consumidor \u201cinteressado\u201d pode evitar desperd\u00edcios no curto prazo, para mais na actual situa\u00e7\u00e3o que demonstrou a fragilidade de muitas opera\u00e7\u00f5es de e-commerce.<br \/>\nPor\u00e9m, a Hist\u00f3ria diz o contr\u00e1rio. Desde os tempos em que os cidad\u00e3os afluentes de Londres compravam vidro e seda que o consumo \u00e9 um estilo de vida, um ritual social. A produ\u00e7\u00e3o industrial permitiu que os produtos estivessem dispon\u00edveis em grandes quantidades e a pre\u00e7os acess\u00edveis. Mas n\u00e3o h\u00e1 d\u00favida de que o consumidor continua a procurar uma satisfa\u00e7\u00e3o emocional no acto de consumo. Se o rendimento dispon\u00edvel \u00e9 limitado, consumir implica fazer escolhas, implica um equil\u00edbrio entre o \u201csacrif\u00edcio\u201d do trabalho e a sua \u201crecompensa\u201d.<br \/>\nDito assim, \u00e9 f\u00e1cil de perceber. Mas algumas marcas, condicionadas pela escassez de recursos, pelo retorno imediato das mec\u00e2nicas de convers\u00e3o, est\u00e3o a negligenciar a rela\u00e7\u00e3o emocional com o consumidor. \u00c9 sabido que as marcas que comunicam em per\u00edodos de crise beneficiam do efeito de transitoriedade que provocam. N\u00e3o h\u00e1 melhor exemplo de como o consumo est\u00e1 enraizado na psicologia social.
